What is an IBCLC, and how can one help?
A board-certified lactation consultant (IBCLC) is trained to support breastfeeding and lactation. They can reassure you when things are going well, and help you prevent and manage common concerns. IBCLCs help with:
- Poor latch, low milk supply, or pain while breastfeeding
- Calming a fussy baby and getting feeding back on track
- Prenatal preparation and early feeding plans
- Pumping, milk storage, and feeding when you're apart from baby
- Returning to work while continuing to breastfeed
- Twins or triplets, premature infants, or babies with special medical needs
About fees and what to ask
IBCLCs are allied healthcare professionals, so consultations are typically billed. Fees may be covered by health insurance or a health ministry program — every provider and country is different, so please ask the consultant directly about:
- Services offered (in-home, in-office, video, phone follow-up)
- Fees and what's included
- Whether they accept your insurance
- Availability for urgent same-day or next-day appointments
